Saltzburg: Red Bull Air Museum

We left Munich and headed for Saltzburg which is in Austria.  We passed by the Saltzburg airport which is on the outskirts of town, and so of course had to visit Hangar-7, better known as the Red Bull hangar.

Housed in this very futuristic glass hangar is the aircraft and car collection of Dietrich Mateschitz, the flamboyant founder of the Red Bull energy-drink empire.  Mateschitz is a Saltzburg boy made good.  Red Bull headquarters are based here in Saltzburg; Mateschitz has a mansion at the edge of town.

There was no charge to enter the hangar which contained about 20 or so planes, helicopters plus some racecars.  Every plane was immaculate.

The polished B-25 is almost invisible against the glass roof background.

Notice the structure at top center;  it's a hanging bar!

Zivko Edge 540 with Dassault/Dornier Alpha Jet in background.

A better look at the Dassault/Dornier Alpha Jet.  This has to be the cleanest airplane I've ever seen.

The Alpha Jet is a light attack jet and advanced jet trainer co-manufactured by Dassault Aviation of France and Dornier Flugzeugwerke of Germany.  Both the French Air and Space Force and German Air Force procured the Alpha Jet in large numbers, the former principally as a trainer aircraft and the latter choosing to use it as a light attack platform. As a result of post-Cold War military cutbacks, Germany elected to retire its own fleet of Alpha Jets in the 1990s and has re-sold many of these aircraft to both military and civilian operators.

Another aerobatic plane:  an Extra EA-300.  This  two-seat aerobatic monoplane is capable of Unlimited category competition. It was designed in 1987 by Walter Extra, a German aerobatic pilot, and built by Extra Flugzeugbau.

Another Alpha Jet with wild tiger paint job.

Love the paint job!  Check out that race car.

Now this is something I've never seen before:  a privately-owned HueyCobra attack helicopter.

Another look at the beautifully polished B-25.

Husky on amphibious floats.

A polished Globe GC-1 Swift.  The Swift are known for being polished.  I've seen many beautifully polished Swifts at AirVenture, better polished than this one.

Another look at the overhead bar.  In this picture you can see the walkway to the bar.

A better look at the walkway to the hanging bar.  It was morning, so the bar wasn't open just now.

Me standing in front of a couple of Extras.

Even the props and spinner are polished.

Cub on amphibious skiis.  Fun!

Lynnette not intimidated by a gigantic Predator made out of steel parts.

Yay, Hangar 7!  Well worth an hour of your time if you are ever in Saltzburg.
